Married! Isabel & Colin – Calgary Wedding Photographer

They say you never forget your first.  Well, this wedding was no exception.  When I opened my studio, I was primarily a family portrait photographer.  It wasn’t until the fall of 2010 that I decided I wanted to extend my coverage to include weddings.  I’m glad I did.

Isabel and Colin’s wedding wasn’t the first wedding that I shot, but it was the first where I was the primary photographer.  And as the primary, you are entrusted with the huge responsibility of documenting the special moments that occur during your client’s big day.  The buck stops with YOU.

Let’s face it – weddings can be hard work.  It can be a long day of shooting, and you need to have a strong grasp of the capabilities of your gear so that you can create that image you envisioned in your head on demand.  So what’s the payoff?  The payoff is when you see moments like “the first look”, the walk down the aisle, the bride and groom’s vows, the exchange of rings – and you see the emotions on your client’s faces that are telling you that at this is the biggest moment of their lives.  It brought me right back to when my wife and I got married 6 years ago.

Such was the wedding day of Isabel and Colin, from a wedding photographer’s perspective.  A day that was full of emotion.  My personal faves from the day are the images of their first look.  They decided that they wanted to see each other prior to the ceremony.  Isabel was standing at the top of the stairs, with her back to the front door.  Colin was standing just inside the front door at the bottom of the stairs, facing away from Isabel.  They turned to face each other and that’s when the tears started to flow.  I loved how Colin attempted to diffuse the situation by pointing at her, as if to say “It’s your fault that this is happening!”. Their family and wedding party were all on hand to witness it.  What an awesome moment.

Much to my delight, Isabel and Colin’s wedding day was blessed with warm weather and some rather dramatic skies.  This made for some great outdoor opportunities.  The ceremony went smoothly, the day went off without a hitch, the wedding party was a breeze to photograph and Isabel and Colin were open to any of my ideas.

When I was packing my gear the night prior, I must have gone through every single piece of equipment at least 10 times.  Extra media cards?  Check.  Batteries fully charged?  Check.  Camera sensors cleaned?  Check.  Lightstands and strobes?  Check.  Pocket Wizards?  Check.  Tripod?  Light meter?  Lenses?  Battery pack?  Cords?  !!!  I was READY for this wedding!

The ultimate payoff when you photograph a wedding is in the feedback you receive from the couple.  I received a fantastic thank-you card from Isabel and Colin and it was very satisfying to read the words “the pictures are AMAZING”.  Mission accomplished.  I’d like to extend a big thank you to Jeff Cruz for assisting and second shooting for me on my maiden voyage as a primary.

Isabel and Colin – thank you again for trusting me with your special day.  Wishing you all the best on your life journey together.  Cheers.
